Iron Horse Modelers
Rock Hill, S.C.
Model railroadings' finest.
The Iron Horse Modelers Club was founded in February 1993. The club's purpose is to promote the hobby of model railroading, to provide a forum for exchange of ideas and to build and operate larger club owned layouts.
In February 1994, we started constructing a 28' by 36' modular "HO" scale layout and in November1994, we started constructing a 16" by 20' "N" scale layout. Most modules are four feet to six feet in length and are owned by club members. The average module cost between $100 and $200 to build, depicts a typical railroad scene and takes several months to a year to complete.
We currently have approximately 25 members who range in age from 15 to 84 and come from all walks of life. About half of the members have "home layouts" while others use the club layout as their "home layout". Still other members collect scale model railroad equipment. Most of us try to precisely replicate the real thing in "HO" (1:87) scale or "N" (1:160) scale. These two scales represent approximately 82% of the hobby. As model railroaders, we tend to do many things: engineers, electricians, designers, dreamers, carpenters, and historians. Most of all, we thoroughly enjoy our hobby.
We hold work sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7:30 PM until we get tired or until someone arrives with new equipment to try out. Saturday's are for our official operating sessions and club sponsored trips. The work sessions include everything from track laying and wiring to landscaping hillsides and building kits.We attempt to capture small moments in time and forever cast them in the layout. "Forever" is until we come up with a better idea.
The club also has about 6 to 12 fieldtrips or events a year. These club sponsored weekends include attending swap meets, visiting other clubs, rail fanning/photo shoots and hosting "open house" exhibitions of the club layouts.
In summary, the Iron Horse Modelers club is the perfect place to get away from the office, relax, meet other people and talk about trains. We invite you to visit.
